Regular dental exams and cleanings by the hygienist or dentist should be done every 3 to 6 months. Cleanings or Prophylaxis help patients maintain optimal dental health.
Our patients are encouraged to get regular dental exams and cleanings/prophylaxis every 3 to 6 months. Cleanings are done in order to help patients not develop periodontal disease. We will try to catch periodontal diseases before the gums and the bone supporting your teeth are severely damaged. If left untreated, periodontal diseases usual get worse over time. During your cleaning, the dentist or hygienist uses an instrument called a periodontal probe to gently measure the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums. When periodontal disease is present, the gums develop a deeper pocket that bleeds, collects more plaque bacteria, and is difficult to keep clean.
Besides checking your gums, your dentist will assess your general dental health, and perform an oral cancer screening. Dental x-rays are usually taken to check for cavities and condition of the bone supporting the teeth. During your cleaning, teeth with be cleaned or scaled with a periodontal scaler or the state-of-the-art Piezo or Cavitron scaler. Then the teeth will be polished with prophy paste. There are many aids that are available to help patients with home care. Oral B electric toothbrushes are sold. MI Paste which helps neutralize acidity in your mouth and it also helps remineralize teeth and create more salivary flow is also dispensed at our office. There are prescription rinses sold that help reduce bacteria in your mouth.  In addition, prescription toothpaste is sold to reduce sensitivity and caries risk. During your cleaning, you will be given oral hygiene instruction which will help you maintain optimal dental health at home.
